Predicting The Future of Internet Use

With major technology trends like machine-to-machine (M2M) communication and the Internet of Things, new technologies and standards for digital signal transmission, together with mobile work, apps and games driving internet user dynamics, the influx of new regulatory and policy developments on broadband in several geographies (notably the US, Europe and China) as a backdrop, tracking the evolution of the key industry metric of global bandwidth cost and staying ahead of the trends is a major challenge, even for the top players in the industry. The key question in this challenge is: What is the average cost of bandwidth by geography globally, how has it trended the past five years, and why? What will be the trend going forward? Who we are looking for To solve this challenge, Yegii is looking to recruit contributors from a multitude of fields (economics, social science, internet studies, market research, big data science, engineering, etc.), a variety of industries and sectors (IT/telecom industry, academia, consulting), and at various levels of seniority (executives, professors, postdocs, PhD students, MBA-, Master- and BA-level students, knowledge workers, analysts, etc.). Why join this challenge? Contributors to previous Yegii challenges say things like: "I'm keen to work on such an exciting topic", "I just had to join the braintrust", "I saw the project as a way to being paid to do the thinking I was doing anyway", "I like the idea of crowdsourcing and finding experts from the outside", "I was excited about the potential of influencing an important organization", "We all thought we knew almost everything there was to know in this field, but all of us walked away with some new perspectives", "I enjoyed getting to know the other experts, in fact we became friends for life". While few join purely for financial gain, this challenge is compensated and might lead to follow-on business and further work with Yegii and/or with our client(s). Yegii's insight process Yegii uses a unique 3-stage insight process to select expert teams, see this graphic representation. In Stage 1, a set of relevant knowledge assets, such as industry reports on Internet trends, are freely available to browse, see Yegii Tech Index, competitors for the challenge are encouraged to make active use of these and also suggest new ones. To read more about Yegii's strategy framework see The Five forces of industry disruption, soon to be available as a downloadable Yegii White Paper. In Stage 2, experts will be given additional context from our client, Akamai and will get a small, related challenge to briefly comment on. In Stage 3, the expert team chosen to complete the challenge will be given access to all previous expert contributions, a slide deck template and final instructions to complete the research and analysis. The final deliverable will be confidential (unless the client decides otherwise), but the knowledge assets gathered in the research phase will remain available to all Yegii's users. A more detailed explanation can be found here How to get involved To become involved, one must follow two simple steps. The first is to register as and identify your experience as an expert on the platform here: The second step is to submit an initial response to the challenge here: About Yegii Yegii is the definitive resource for industries re-shaped by emerging technology, policy, user dynamics or business models. Deadline: Friday, February 27 , 2015
What is the average cost of bandwidth by geography globally and how has it trended the part 5 years? In stage one you are simply asked to answer briefly how you would solve that question.

Deadline: Wednesday, March 11, 2015
Please list the top 2-3 openly available datasets for broadband cost and list 2-3 datasets/industry reports that you ideally would want access to for this study and make a brief comment for why you ideally would use these for the analysis, keeping in mind that the client's ultimate interest is in the current state and likely evolution of B2B broadband costs in the market, by geography (which is different from negotiated bulk prices for a large company like Akamai).

Deadline: Tuesday, March 31, 2015
Secret question; will be unveiled once a top team is identified. Once the initial question is answered, and a top multidisciplinary team is identified, the challenge will move to more sensitive business development and market strategy questions of relevance to the company. Those stages may entail additional budget is available.
